Choosing Your Therapist

Choosing a therapist is an extremely important decision.  After all, you have finally chosen to take control of bettering your life and improving your well-being.  You want to make sure that you have the right therapist for you.

The following information and questions are intended to assist you in selecting a therapist:

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) are licensed by the state. The license should be visible in the office.

Questions for your potential therapist:

  • What is your area of expertise, for example, depression, anxiety, substance abuse?
  • Do you provide therapy for individuals, couples, families?
  • What is the nature and extent of your experience? What about your continuing education?
  • How long have you been in private practice?
  • What is your approach and theoretical background? How active are you, the therapist, in sessions?
  • Do you accept my insurance? What is your fee if I have no insurance?
  • What is the length of a session and the frequency? How soon is an appointment available?

If you feel uncomfortable speaking with a potential therapist then the therapist is not for you.
